In the Breakdown Series, I am exploring the combination of my school doodles, observational drawing, and queer imagery and fantasy. I primarily use black and white geometric shapes to depict portraits and objects that reflect different aspects of myself and my queerness. The style is based on my old distraction habit of filling notebooks with cathartic, geometric shapes, using different patterns to create depth and shape. I don’t plan every shape before laying down ink, instead allowing myself to go into a meditative state of creation. I easily slip into perfectionism, and forcing myself to create in this way requires me to trust the unseen outcome, especially when I’ve thought I’ve messed up a certain shape or pattern.
